"With Cajun mayo poured beautifully over the top of the food. It looked almost too lovely to devour. But devour we did."
Well it's been a long time since we uploaded a restaurant review, but back to it.
Whitefield and I over the last few months have been tasting the delights of Prestwich and Whitefield's new and old food establishments. There's such a selection to choose from as well.
We've also decided to take a slightly different focus from now on as well. While we will have a focus on Prestwich and Whitefield we will also be giving you our opinions on restaurants, food pubs and cool cafes outside of the city centre. People tend to head straight to the city centre thinking that's where the 'best restaurants' are. But we've always found the best eateries are actually in the suburbs, usually down the road from where you live. Which was one of the reasons we started this blog in the first place. Anyway back to it.
Today we decided to head to one of Whitefield's newest cool bars - The Northern Crafthouse - just over the road from Whitefield tram stop on Bury New Road.
Entering the bar we were welcomed into a family friendly environment with a relaxed and unpretentious decor. The bar has an amazing selection of beers and spirits. Some of the world's best Gins and a fun cocktail menu. From an ale point of view they have perhaps the cheapest pint of the excellent Blue Moon in the whole of Manchester (that doesn't mean you should put the price up Northern Crafthouse!). I settled for a refreshing pint of Prahva and Whitefield went for a soda water (she was driving) which came from a retro soda syphon - always a nice touch - although it was a little flat. But it is free so I guess you can't complain.
The ambience of the bar was excellent, lots of families in for a bit of Sunday grub, a bunch of lads having a quiet Sunday relax after perhaps a big Saturday evening, couples on romantic dates and us two. I was pleased to hear music piped into the bar, not too loud, but an eclectic collection of tracks. Including album tracks from Pulp's Different Class album. Whoever picks the music must be about the same age as me and have the same fantastic (Whitefield may say awful!) taste in music.
Usually we will go for two different things on the menu, but today we both went for the same thing. Chicken Tacos.
They arrived, delivered by lovely friendly staff, and they looked amazing. Presentation is perhaps 40% of good food and their presentation was excellent. With Cajun mayo poured beautifully over the top of the food. It looked almost too lovely to devour. But devour we did. The taco's were beautifully soft - sometimes they can be hard and too much like tortillas. The chicken was cooked perfectly, moist, tangy and succulent. Topped with a mango relish and a guacamole base. All together it was a messy wonderful treat. Whitefield thought perhaps there was too much of a guacamole base but I thought it was a perfect mixture of elements.
Afterwards we were stuffed and although tempted by the alcoholic hard shakes (although you can ask for them without alcohol) we decided to return at another time to experience Crafthouse on an evening so we can taste some of the amazing Gins on offer and maybe, no probably, try a few waffles.
